1. wrath- "Wrath is the only sin not necessarily associated with selfishness or self-interest (although one can of course be wrathful for selfish reasons, such as jealousy, closely related to the sin of envy). Dante described vengeance as "love of justice perverted to revenge and spite". In its original form, the sin of anger also encompassed anger pointed internally rather than externally. Thus suicide was deemed as the ultimate, albeit tragic, expression of hatred directed inwardly, a final rejection of God's gifts." ~ from Wikipedia
editinspired by Alexander Mcqueen as well, i'll look for the year and title later, i'm pressed for time, atm sry! 2. envy- "Envy comes from people's ignorance of, or lack of belief in, their own gifts." ~Jean Vanier
i suppose the concept is how one is blind to what they already have as they are consumed with the desire to possess what they do not have. typical "green with envy" colour scheme. i am very much guilty of this sin, it's human nature.
3. greed- "For greed all nature is too little." ~Lucius Annaeus Seneca
the gown's silhoutte is that of a serpent's. i actually got the allegorical referenincing wrong, the snake's supposed to be for envy. but i think using it on greed is still justifiable.
4. pride- Lu`ci`fe´ri`an 1. Of or pertaining to Lucifer; having the pride of Lucifer; satanic; devilish.
5. gluttony- "Our environment, the world in which we live and work, is a mirror of our attitudes and expectations." ~Earl Nightingale
this piece is a mirror of how we, the human race, are greedy pigs who take more than we can get from mother nature. it is our over-consumption to the point of her waste and destruction. the whole ensemble looks like vomit, but doesn't pollution disgust you? i cannot tell whether she is eating it or purging it out. anyway, the gas mask concept is actually inspired from japanese fashion blog pictures where pretty tokyo girls wearing masks, i assumed it was from the pollution. lol, but then i researched and it may sick and they didn't wanna spread it.
6. lust- "I was consumed by a hell furnace of localized lust for every passing nymphet whom as a law-abiding poltroon I never dared approach." ~Lolita, Vladimir Nabokov (1955)
lolita is such a tease, which is insane cuz she's what, 12? anyway, teasing is the concept here, as my mum would say, if she's exposing her boobs like that she's better off naked. but she's not and it makes you just want to go and the rest off. but you can't. haha.
7. sloth- "Are we like late Rome, infatuated with past glories, ruled by a complacent, greedy elite, and hopelessly powerless to respond to changing conditions?"~ Camille Paglia
people become lazy because everything is too convenient. the complacency of this generation will be civilization's downfall. hence, the spears : ) oh and correct me if i am wrong but was the two headed eagle rome's symbol? or?
<edit>ALSO, yes credit, omg credit credit, it slipped my mind. the pose and the dress inspiration from Alexender Mcqueen's S/S 2002 "The dance of the twisted bull"</edit> ----- it's been awhile!!! >w< exams are over, though i still have university interviews. i noticed that i spend more time my fash illustrations now, i do not like. it was meant to be fast, sketchy, just enought to get rid of the inspiration's insatiable nagging.
inspired from Florence + the Machine's Seven Devils. i love her new album, but i think lungs' is more catchy. but give me a few more weeks and i'll have memorised most of the lyrics of ceremonials too! haha.
i am not glorifying this vices by glamourising them. i suppose these devils are meant to be attractive because human need to have pleasant, not necessarily morally right, reinforcements for us to keep falling for the devils. we all have devils, but it does not mean we cannot fight. so preachy. i am Christian, i believe in God. i think the devil and God come together, we do not realise what righteousness is if it is not contrasted by sin.
ALSOOO, COMISSIONS ARE OPEN: [link] pls be kind!!! ;A;
OH and i have a new tumblr!!!:[link] will be posting up the line arts and individual pieces in tumblr!!! see you there :> feel free to drop me a question or what.ev!
When I first saw this picture, I didn't realize the meaning behind the lines and colors, but in the past few days I checked it again and again, and now I think it's amazing.
I'm not an expert, but if you're okay with me sharing my opinion, I would say envy and lust are my favourites, they're absolutely flawless. I especially like wrath and pride too. Wrath reminds me a bit of Odile from Swan Lake with those black feathers, and I like how you mixed the elegance of the skirt and the veil with the modern zippers. Pride looks gorgeous, at first sight it's almost angelic, but when you look closer, there's that fine white fabric turning into black that shows perfectly its evil side.
Sloth is interesting, but I don't really get this roman eagle thing, probably because this was the one that I couldn't match with the sin at first.
Greed is nice too, but I would've put on more gold to symbolize wealth, or some big jewels maybe. Oh, and gluttony! Well, it's a bit too much for my taste, but I have to admit, that the idea is brilliant. Again, its just my subjective opinion.
You're a very creative and talented artist, and I'm just some random girl from the other end of the globe, but I felt like I need to share my thoughts, because your works are really beautiful and inspiring. English isn't my first language, so I hope I didn't write anything stupid. (:
It is always interesting to see how one views the deadly sins through their eyes, almost like an educational experience of how they see the world. This take was unique and I enjoyed looking at each piece from top to bottom, trying to guess the sins by their appearance and being pleasantly surprised.
I thought pride and wrath were a bit off personally. Though I wasn't expecting your vision, they seemed to be lacking the same spotlight you had given the other five- like ideas that just didn't come to fruition right. Pride I feel could be done more with. While the idea of Lucifer as pride is an interesting revamp at the concept, i thought that the fallen angel look could have been taken a bit further to go into how he is no longer, and how he has corrupted (more than a bit of grey on his hem). Wrath, while another interesting view at the concept, lacked to me the edge you often see and feel wrath taking- it was very placid.
All in all, however, a beautiful piece. The colors were done beautifully and picked with a careful eye. The research into this project is exquisite and shows dedication beyond personal beliefs on how the sins should be interpreted. I especially liked gluttony, sloth, and lust.
